Google Announces Fiber Broadband Network in the United States: 100 Times Faster than Traditional Networks
Google announced on Thursday the launch of its internet broadband service, Google Fiber, in Kansas City, Missouri, USA, promising access speeds that are more than 100 times faster than some of the fastest networks offered by traditional cable and telecommunications operators in the United States.
The monthly price of this new Google Fiber TV service will be $120, which includes providing the main broadcasting network, 1GB of internet access speed per second, and 1TB of cloud storage space. In addition, users can also choose a $70 monthly plan, which does not include traditional TV channels.
This service will provide various features, such as the ability for users to record 8 TV dramas at once and store up to 500 hours of high-definition programs. In addition, users can also use a tablet or smartphone as a voice activated remote control. Google will provide Nexus 7 tablets and Google TV applications to early users of this service. Google Fiber TV service will also allow users to search for live channels, Netflix, and YouTube, record TV dramas, and tens of thousands of hours of on-demand programs.
Google will also provide this new service to users in Kansas City, Kansas. Google CFO Patrick Pichette said, "The internet is a huge positive force, and now we are at a crossroads." In the development process of the Google Fiber project, Pichette played a leading role. He said that since 2000, the improvement of internet speed has shown a stable trend, and Google will increase internet speed by 100 times. According to Google executives who demonstrated this latest service, its download speed will reach around 1GB per second.
Google has been investing in laying fiber optic cables in Kansas City, Missouri since 2011. Previously, in 2010, the company invited major cities to help identify communities willing to participate in this project.
